Update on Break-in; Arrests Made


Our deputies have arrested three men in connection with a Wednesday breaking and entering case in which the suspects allegedly attempted to run over a man with their vehicle.

The incident happened around 2 p.m. Wednesday at the home of Lynn Thomas Gunter, 4209 Red Drive. A neighbor was reportedly checking on the home after hearing an alarm sounding and saw two males exiting the home with property. The suspects got into a small silver vehicle, deputies said, and then struck the neighbor with the vehicle while attempting to leave.The neighbor didn’t suffer any serious injuries.

Gunter reported a firearm, TV and jewelry taken from his home.Thursday, deputies arrested Mathew Cameron Morris, 22, of 1959 Pickett Road after he sold some of the property in question to a local cash for gold business.Morris was charged with possession of stolen goods and possession of stolen firearm. He was placed in the Lee County Jail under $20,000 secured bond.After arresting Morris, deputies were able to identify Christopher Shane Brown, 21, of 652 Holder Road and Stewart James Tyner, 20, of 3818 Woodside Drive as suspects in the break-in. Additionally, Brown is reported to have confessed to operating the vehicle while the two men were leaving the scene.Brown and Tyner were both charged with attempted murder, breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods and placed in the Lee County Jail under $1,000,000 secured bond.

Deputy Uses Deadly Force at Dreamland MHP

On December 8, 2009 at approximately 10:15 PM, a Lee County Deputy wounded a man identified as Gilmer Escobar (31) W/M of Lot 61 Dreamland MHP Sanford. Deputies responded to Lot 61 Dreamland MHP Sanford after Escobar called 911 and reported he was going to commit suicide. Upon Deputies arrival they encountered Escobar w/ a knife and what was believed to be a pistol. Escobar's actions caused the deputy to respond w/ deadly force, thus discharging his firearm and striking Escobar in the right arm. Escobar was treated at Central Carolina Hospital for superficial wounds and released.

Escobar has been sent for a mental evaluation, a family member reported Escobar has a long history of mental illness.

The SBI is investigating the officer involved shooting as standard procedure.

Drugs Agents Cancel Plans For A White Christmas


An undercover operation by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division has resulted in the seizure of 917 grams of Cocaine and the arrest of one person. Carlos Manuel Ortiz, 20, of 2622 Brick Capital Court, Sanford, NC, was arrested after agents seized the drugs during an undercover operation in the West Sanford area of Lee County. Ortiz was placed in the Lee County Jail under $400,000.00 secured bond. The seized drugs had an estimated potential street value of $183,400.00.

Sheriff Carter Celebrates with Young Karate Students

Sheriff Carter attended a ceremony today at G-Force Kenpo Karate Systems, Inc
at 223 B Carthage Street. During the ceremony, the Sheriff's own nephew, Dillon Gattis received his brown belt. Owner Sensei Ben Brooks and Instructor Kevin Julich were present to hand out belts to all that graduated colors.

During the ceremony, Sheriff Carter was awarded an honorary black belt by Sensei Ben Brooks.

Sheriff Carter stated that "the well-rounded teachings of martial arts can positively impact kids by enhancing their life-skills and placing emphasis on their values and attitudes. It also encourages kids to draw on their own strengths and strive for their personal best."
