Phone Scam!

The Lee County Sheriff's Office is seeing a significant increase in phone scams involving people posing as deputies to demand money from others.

Many of the scams have involved residents receiving calls from others claiming to be actual deputies at the Sheriff's Office. The scammers are demanding payment over the phone for a missed court date or jury duty, claiming that they'll be arrested if they do not pay.

The calls have an "authentic feel" and often involve the names of actual sheriff's deputies.  Make note that the Sheriff's Office never makes such calls to demand or request money!  Residents are encouraged to never give out personal information over the phone with people they do not recognize.

Those receiving such calls are asked to hang up and call 919-775-5531 to report the scam. Try to capture or screenshot the number the caller is calling from if in all possible.
