Capt. John Holly of the Lee County Sheriff's Office opened fire on a vehicle driven by Terry Eugene Brinkley, 50, of Glen Oak Drive in Sanford around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday after Brinkley allegedly drove his vehicle at another drug agent. Holly's shot struck the back left tire of Brinkley's vehicle, causing him to veer into nearby Greenwood Road and strike another vehicle. Nobody was injured. Brinkley was one of two suspects in an alleged drug deal that drug investigators had received a tip about. When investigators got to the scene of the alleged deal, which was near Greenwood Elementary School, they moved to arrest both suspects. At that point, Brinkley started his vehicle and reportedly rammed a sheriff's department cruiser before turning his vehicle toward one of the drug agents, at which point Holly opened fire. The second suspect, whom investigators said Tuesday they haven't identified, escaped the scene. Brinkley, whom investigators found in possession of an undisclosed amount of crack cocaine, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a law enforcement officer, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and possession of cocaine within 300 feet of a school. Deputies said he will also face traffic charges.
Lee County Sheriff Tracy Carter said drug agents received a tip that the drug deal would be taking place at the time and location and stressed that his department wouldn't knowingly set up a "buy and bust" operation so close to a school."This was not a drug deal that we had set up as part of an investigation, this was something we had received a tip about," he said. "Drug deals are going to happen, and we can't control the location of all of them. We're just glad nobody was hurt in this incident."
