As Lee County Sheriff, I wanted to take this opportunity in the aftermath of the tornado that struck our community on April 16th of this year and thank the many individuals and businesses for assisting in rescue and shelter operations for thousands of people who were affected. I truly believe that EVERY person in Lee County was affected by this storm in one way or another.
My department and I are particularly grateful to the long list of law enforcement and fire services that responded from across our entire state. Our uniforms and vehicles may look different but our goals and objectives were very much the same! They all demonstrated conspicuous leadership throughout every phase of these operations.
Noteworthy assistance during the aftermath was also provided by numerous churches and religious organizations, civic organizations like Matt 6, Central Carolina Jaycees, Rotary Club, VFW and many many others. Thank you CARA and other animal rights groups for your contributions in locating lost and injured pets. For those unselfish volunteers who manned the soup kitchens AFTER working their normal 8-5 job or a 10 hour shift at a local plant. The citizens of Lee County played such a vital role in making clean up and recovery so much easier.
Many thanks for all the good people at the American Red Cross who responded quickly and kept the general public informed.
I am also extremely proud of my staff, who braved dangerous conditions and worked tirelessly to insure that each citizen affected on this day was assisted in every way possible, safely removed from harm's way, taken to shelters, fed, and reunited with their families as quickly as possible.
Our collective response to this calamitous event brought out the best in all of us. One last thing; Please continue to keep all of the victims in your prayers, especially the two families who lost loved ones.
Sheriff Tracy Carter
