Severe Weather Education

More than 25 tornadoes touched down dozens of times in 33 North Carolina counties on Saturday, April 16, 2011. Twenty-four people were killed, hundreds of homes were destroyed and thousands were damaged. It's safe to say that everyone in Lee county was impacted on this day one way or another. To this day, I'm still overwhelmed by the way our citizens responded! I would ask that all readers continue to pray for those who lost loved ones and suffered other losses.

As we approach this time of year, I urge you all to re-familiarize yourself with several key components of emergency services.

Sign up for FREE emergency information alerts. Residents may add cell phones, email and text numbers to receive important information from County officials. Additionally, Lee County now offers Weather Alerts to residents who sign up for this free service. You will be notified by the National Weather Service when a Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado Warning is issued from the National Weather Service.

More local resources can be found here (Lee Co Emergency Management), including some educational items for children.

I urge ALL citizens and business owners to review this so that when (not if) severe weather strikes, you can be prepared.
