Operation Carolina Shield Completed
Lee County law enforcement agencies partnered with the U.S. Marshals Service last week to locate all of the county's sex offenders as part of a larger operation to check the compliance of all sex offenders throughout North and South Carolina.
There are approximately 50 registered sex offenders live in Lee County. Some registered to reside in Lee County are now in prison.
We had no arrests here in Lee County as part of Operation Carolina Shield, but the department plans to double check the details of a few of the offenders' terms of release said the Sheriff.
Residency guidelines for sex offenders include living more than 1,000 feet away from a school or daycare center, Carter said. Sex offenders also have to notify local law enforcement immediately if they plan to move to Lee County, as well as law enforcement in the county they're moving from.
Carter said Lee County law enforcement officers regularly check the compliance of local sex offenders, but Operation Carolina Shield marked the first large-scale, unannounced check officers have done in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals.
"It was a successful operation, and we appreciate the U.S. Marshals office for assisting us with that," Carter said. "... We do take this responsibility very seriously."
Anyone can look up the location of sex offenders in Lee County via the Lee County Sheriff's Office website. If anyone has specific concerns, please contact Lt. Van Holly at (919) 775-5531.
