Captain Johnny Barnes of the Lumberton Police Department, North Carolina announced on behalf of Chief Mike McNeill that Master Police Officer Jeremiah Goodson was shot and killed about 11:00am this morning.
Initial reports indicate that Officer Goodson, age 33, was off duty and was at the Shell Gas Station at 5030 Fayetteville Road.
Officer Goodson recognized a patron at the gas station who was wanted on a homicide warrant. Officer Goodson contacted the Department and advised them of the situation and the suspect’s location.
When responding officers arrived, they approached the suspect in his vehicle. The suspect unexpectedly commenced to open fire at approaching officers, striking Goodson in the chest multiple times.
The suspect immediately surrendered and was taken into custody by additional officers.
Sheriff Kenneth Sealey stated that 20 to 25 deputies also responded to the scene upon hearing that shots were fired and an officer was down.
Officer Goodson was previously assigned to the Gang Investigation Section and was currently the Department’s School Liaison Officer.
Officer Goodson is the second officer in the history of the Lumberton Police Department to be killed in the line of duty.
Master Police Officer Jeremiah Montgomery Goodson Jr. is survived by his expectant wife and one child. An unconfirmed report stated that Officer Goodson’s expectant wife gave birth to their second child later in the day.
