If you’ve been following my blog, then you’ve seen this
quote before. Once I had a fortune
cookie after eating at a local Chinese restaurant. It was the most profound statement. It read, “Society prepares the crime, the
criminal commits it!”
Can members of our community be making themselves open
targets to thieves? Yes we can! Although car burglaries happen quite often,
numbers increase during the holiday months because thieves are looking for
citizens that carelessly leave their vehicles unlocked, giving them easy access
to many items, including Christmas gifts.
According to the reporting statistics, the following items are
normally the target items of thefts for car burglaries;
- GPS devices
- Laptop Computers
- iPod / MP3 Player
- Purse
- Wallet
- Camera
- Cellular Phone
- Hand Tools
- Sun Glasses
- Compact Disc
- Coats & Clothing
- Change
- Garage door openers
A perceived value of an item left in an unattended car is a
lure to crime. If there is a bag or box left in plain sight, then it
could be why a car is targeted for burglary. That bag or box might have
nothing inside of it, but it might look like it does. Keep anything that
might look like it is valuable in the trunk or hidden in the car. When
you get home or to work, take valuables out.
Thieves take the path of least resistance. So if you don’t
take the steps to make yourself a little harder to be a target, you’re setting
yourself up to be a victim!
LOCK YOUR VEHICLE DOORS and report ANY suspicious activity by
calling 9-1-1.
