Get to Know Your Neighbors!

The Lee County Sheriff's Office is wanting to keep the conversation around preparedness on the top of the list for discussion in your neighborhoods. With the restrictions in place right now for COVID-19, it's important that we stay connected as a community!

In the event of natural disaster, your neighbors are likely to be your first responders offering assistance or information. Research shows that well-connected communities are more resilient in disaster situations. It’s crucial to communicate and share information with your neighbors in times of crisis.

Nextdoor has proven to be a great resource for neighbors to exchange information, hear directly from local government departments, and communicate with each other during a natural disaster.  Nearly 90 neighborhoods and 29K households in Lee county are currently connected with each other as well as getting updates from our department when posted.  This platform has proven to be a game changer by securely connecting neighborhoods together so they can share information, get to know each other, etc.

Here are 3 tips for using Nextdoor to help you and your neighbors stay safe during emergencies:

1. Find & share resources. Start a conversation on Nextdoor about collective neighborhood resources. Let your neighbors know what resources you have available to share, and ask what your neighbors have that they can contribute.  Most individual households won’t have all the resources they might need in a disaster, but collectively, a neighborhood’s resources can serve everyone. See this help article, http://bit.ly/2mGnyiF, for a list of common supplies you may need in a disaster.

2. Share updates & distribute information. Prepare yourself by knowing where to get alerts and information about the natural disaster. Then, share as much information as you can with your neighbors through Nextdoor.  Distributing accurate and timely information can reduce the potential for loss of life, injury, and minimize the overall impact of the disaster on your neighborhood.

3. Ask for & offer help. Don’t hesitate to connect with your neighbors if you need supplies or assistance. Also ask your neighbors if they need help.

Last but not least, more than ever, Lee County citizens are connecting with us; between Facebook, Blogger and Nextdoor, over 18K people are getting the latest in crime alerts, severe weather, community events and more on a daily basis!
