NRA Awards K-9 grant to the Sheriff's Office

The Sheriff's Office was awarded a $450.00 grant by the National Rifle Association today and was presented to Sheriff Carter by Kirk Smith, the NRA field representative and former county commissioner. The presentation was held at the "Hunting Hole", a local business which sells firearms and other hunting supplies.

The money is earmarked towards the purchase of a second canine for the department.

Sheriff Carter said the department hopes to purchase a second canine unit within the next six months. He estimated the cost would be between $4,000 and $5,000.

After reading of this news in the Sanford Herald, Mr. John Goldean made contact with the Sheriff's office and made his own donation of $100.00. The Sheriff commented, "It's great to see that our citizens also see the need for a second canine unit and are willing to dig into their own pockets to see it happen. The canine unit has proven to be a professional unit with a purpose of service to its citizens. The support both from the county officials and the general public has been well deserved and most appreciated. With continued support, the Lee County Sheriff's Office canine unit will continue it success in serving and protecting our citizens."
