March is Tornado Awareness Month

March is the beginning of tornado season.  We've seen, first hand in Lee county, no one is immune from the wrath of nature's destructive storm systems.

Now is a good time to establish a plan for your family in the event of one of nature's nasty surprises. Every household should have a well-thought out plan and have emergency supplies handy.  In an average year, 800 tornadoes are reported nationwide, resulting in 80 deaths and 1500 injuries. Tornadoes can happen any time of the year and any time of the day. In our area, peak tornado occurrence is March through May and most likely to occur between 3:00 pm and 9:00 pm, but can occur at any time of the day or night.

One of the first things I encourage our citizens to do is to sign up for our free notification system, Code Red.  Click here for more information.

Next, visit the Lee County website here to obtain further information and downloadable information and visit the Kids Corner site here for your little ones to assist them in understanding weather and how to prepare for this yearly occurrence.
