Jailers Get High Tech Equipment

Lee County Sheriff’s Department’s jail staff can now use the newest model TASER, a non-lethal defense device to subdue unruly convicts. Lee County Sheriff Tracy Carter said the Lee County Jail was chosen for the equipment’s introduction into the county because officers who work there deal with criminals on a regular basis. Tasers gives the officers another tool to gain control of a situation and would increase officer safety and should be a deterrence in itself.

Sheriff Carter stated that they obtained a single Taser unit and hopes to have one unit per shift for the jail soon, and has plans to extend usage to his whole department in the near future.

The TASER X26 uses a replaceable cartridge containing compressed nitrogen to deploy two small probes that are attached to the TASER X26 by insulated conductive wires. The TASER X26 transmits electrical pulses along the wires and into the body affecting the sensory and motor functions of the peripheral nervous system. The energy can penetrate up to two cumulative inches of clothing, or one inch per probe.

Tasers are transforming law enforcement agencies across the country and becoming a vital tool for patrol level law enforcement officers and correctional facilities around the world.
