Prevention and Education Classes Available!

Although it is the job of the police to fight crime, we can all help to bring crime down.

Sheriff Carter and his staff want all citizens to be mindful that neighborhood crime watch meetings are open to all residents of Lee County, including but not limited to, merchants, homeschool groups, school and parent-teacher groups, churches, youth organizations, homeowner associations, etc.

Most crime is against property, not people, and not many crimes are carefully planned. Most crimes are committed on the spur of the moment - possessions left in a car or a door or window to a house left open. But you can reduce the risk by securing your home and car. This will also help the police, by giving them more time to tackle serious crime. That's good for you and your family - because it makes your neighbourhood a safer place to live in.

The chances that you, or a member of your family will be a victim of crime are low. Crimes and especially violent crimes are still comparatively rare. Nevertheless, many people are frightened that they, or someone close to them, will be the victim of crime. The best way to minimise the risks of crime is by taking sensible precautions. Many people already do this as part of their everyday lives, often without realising it. Sensible precautions limit risk and reduce crime. These meetings will not only give you practical and straightforward ways to educate and protect your family, they will give participants the chance to begin their own neighborhood crime watch committee, allowing them to work with local law enforcement to battle crime.

Any great law enforcement leader will tell you that in order to fight crime effectively, the community must be involved, being the eyes and ears, since police can't be everywhere all the time!

If you or your group would like to know more about these programs or would like to host a meeting, please contact Lt. Bryan Allen with the Lee County Sheriff's Office. He can be reached at 919-718-4561 or via email at ballen@leecountync.gov
