Deputies and Citizen Involved in Accident

While responding to assist another deputy that had stopped a suspect from a Vass bank robbery, a patrol vehicle driven by Lee County detective Van Holly collided with another vehicle, seriously injuring Helen Douglas. The accident occured on N.C. 87 in Harnett County. Ms. Douglas was taken to Cape Fear Hospital in Fayetteville with a fractured diaphragm and a collapsed lung. Detective Holly has been charged by the Highway Patrol with a stop light violation.

Lee County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Randall Butler stated that the detectives were en route to a location in the Cameron area of Harnett County where another detective had stopped a man initially suspected to be involved in a Vass bank robbery earlier in the day. That man was later found to be not involved in the robbery. The robbery happened at First Bank in Vass on Wednesday. Moore County authorities reported a white man with a white rag over his face robbed the bank and fled on foot. The third detective began following the vehicle matching the suspect's description as it crossed into Lee County from Moore County. He followed the vehicle into Harnett County before initiating the stop. The Moore County Sheriff's Office charged another man with the robbery Thursday.

Sheriff Carter has been in contact with the family and hopes that Ms. Douglas has a speedy recovery.
